HOW TO MAKE READ-ONLY .DMG FILES WRITABLE [ Developers ]
Publicado por Tony el viernes, 9 de diciembre de 2011 | 13:06

This post is very useful if you have ever needed to make a readonly Mac .dmg file writable. Say for instance that you wanted to create a Mac OS X install disk, then mount it up writable, add something to it and then save it to be used to install OS X in say “VMware”. Listed below are the steps to make this happen:
From Terminal:
source:
###This creates a writable dmg image###
hdiutil convert nameoffile.dmg -format UDRW -o nameoffile_writable.dmg
hdiutil convert nameoffile.dmg -format UDRW -o nameoffile_writable.dmg
###This tells you the size of the image###
hdiutil resize -limits nameoffile_writable.dmg
hdiutil resize -limits nameoffile_writable.dmg
###This resizes your dmg image so that you will have space to add stuff to it. Make sure you substitute the first number from the previous command and add to it sufficiently for the 9999etc. number###
hdiutil resize -sectors 999999 nameoffile_writable.dmg
hdiutil resize -sectors 999999 nameoffile_writable.dmg
###This mounts the new dmg writable image so that you can add stuff to it###
hdiutil attach nameoffile_writable.dmg
hdiutil attach nameoffile_writable.dmg

Pacifist: APP that opens Mac OS X (.pkg, .dmg) package files
Publicado por Tony el miércoles, 7 de diciembre de 2011 | 2:20
This is the amazing tool for those who wants to edit or create an APP for MAC

Pacifist 2.6.4 is a shareware application that opens Mac OS X .pkg package files, .dmg disk images, and .zip, .tar, .tar.gz, .tar.bz2, and .xar file archives and allows you to extract individual files and folders out of them. This is useful, for instance, if an application which is installed by the operating system becomes damaged and needs to be reinstalled without the hassle of reinstalling all of Mac OS X. Pacifist is also able to verify existing installations and find missing or altered files*, and Pacifist can also examine the kernel extensions installed in your system to let you see what installer installed them, and whether the installer was made by Apple or a third-party.
Pacifist is compatible with Mac OS X 10.3 or higher, including Mac OS X 10.6 “Snow Leopard”. It is also compiled as a Universal Binary for maximum performance on both PowerPC and Intel-based Macs.
Pacifist is not yet compatible with Mac OS X 10.7 “Lion”, but a Lion-compatible version is in the works and will hopefully be ready soon.
- Download Pacifist in .dmg format.
- Download in .zip format (for users whose DiskImageMounter application is damaged).
- For users using Mac OS X 10.2.x, an older version of Pacifist is available here.
- Read the Documentation for Pacifist online.
- See some screenshots of Pacifist in action!
- Pacifist is $20 shareware - you can click here to register via Kagi.

A LITTLE ABOUT HACKINTOSH (iATKOS)
Publicado por Tony el viernes, 11 de noviembre de 2011 | 4:40

Mac OS X 10.4.4 "Tiger"
On January 10, 2006, Apple released Mac OS X 10.4.4 with the first generation of Intel-based Macs, the iMac and the MacBook Pro. These machines used Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) platform firmware instead of the legacy BIOS found on most x86 motherboards. On February 14, 2006, an initial "hack" of Mac OS X v10.4.4 was released on the Internet by a programmer with the pseudonym crg92.[14] Within hours Apple released the 10.4.5 update,[15] which was patched again by the same author within two weeks.[16] On April 3, 2006 Apple released their 10.4.6 update[17] and again patches were released within two weeks that allowed users to install most of this update on non-Apple computers, although this did not include the updated kernel in 10.4.6. In June, the hackers released the 10.4.7 Mac OS X update for non-Apple computers using the 10.4.4 kernel.
Up to the release of the 10.4.8 update, all OSx86 patches used the 10.4.4 kernel with the rest of the operating system at version 10.4.8. However, the newer frameworks relied on the newer kernels and this led to users of 10.4.8 encountering many problems. Apple also started making more use of SSE3 instructions on their hardware making it even more difficult for users with CPUs supporting only SSE2 (such as olderPentium 4's) to get a fully compatible system running.
[]XNU kernel patch
Two programmers, working under the pseudonyms Mifki or Vitaliy and Semthex, released new kernels by starting with the open source XNU tree and applying patches necessary to run the kernel on non-Apple hardware. Mifki's goal was to release the kernel with as few patches as possible, able to run on close-to-Apple hardware. Semthex's goal was to make his kernel more compatible with legacy hardware with the omission of some crucial features.
Both kernels allowed most of the updated kernel extensions/frameworks to work, making properly configured PCs operate more like genuine Apple computers. While Mifki has only updated his kernel once, Semthex updates it regularly and added AMD, VMware and SSE2-support in later versions. Semthex released his hacked kernel source code on his webpage. On December 24, 2006 he also released the latest patches for the SSE3 kernel as a diff file for his original source tree as a Christmas present to the community. The SSE2 emulation that Semthex developed with Rufus was the first fully complete emulation of all SSE3 instructions to be presented to the OSx86 community. The previous SSE2 emulation was incomplete, only emulating 3 of the available SSE3 instructions, and very inefficient compared to the new emulator. The new emulator enabled even SSE2 OSx86 users to run SSE3 based applications such as iTunes 7 and most 3D programs.
In the early days of 10.4.8, an Intel-SSE3 only install DVD was released by JaS, which included Vitaliy's and Semthex's kernel. A few weeks later, a hacker calling himself tubgirlreleased an AMD-SSE3 install DVD. With Semthex's successful completion of the SSE2 Kernel, JaS released an SSE2-SSE3 universal DVD and announced his retirement from hackingMac OS X after seven successful DVD releases. However, on August 9, 2008, JaS released yet another distribution featuring both a client and server version of Mac OS 10.5.4.
[]Mac OS X v10.5 "Leopard"
As early as Mac OS X v10.5 build 9A466 the community has maintained a version of Leopard that can run on non-Apple hardware. A hacker by the handle of BrazilMac created one of the earliest patching processes which made it convenient for users to install Mac OS X onto 3rd party hardware by using a legally obtained, retail version of Apple Mac OS X. It was utilizing the BrazilMac patch that many effortless distros of Mac OSx86 came to fruition. Five of the most popular builds go by the name JaS, Kalyway, iATKOS, iPC and iDeneb - although more recently these builds are on the way out as the Boot-132 method (described below) gains popularity. However, all of these compilations rely on the work of kernel hackers made by Lorem (build 9A466), SynthetiX (builds 9A499, 9A527 and 9A559), ToH (builds 9A581, 9B13 and 9B18) and more recently a group calling themselves StageXNU (now called Voodoo) (Darwin 9.4.0). Their contributions trickled down into the various Mac OSx86 installers, readily available on the internet. There continue to be refined and updated builds released, not just to maintain compatibility with Apple releases but an ever increasing number of third party components. The OSx86 community has been quick to make the necessary modifications to enable Apple's latest releases to run on non-Apple hardware. Within hours of Leopard's release, an AMD/Intel SSE2/3 Kernel Patcher was created which removed the HPET requirement from an original untouched mach_kernel file, a core component of the Mac OS.
[edit]Mac OS X v10.6 "Snow Leopard"
When "Snow Leopard" was released, Russian hacker netkas created a version of Chameleon which can boot Mac OS X v10.6. The main problem was that many people were forced to modify DSDT or use kexts due to some specific issues. As soon as possible modbin and dmitrik have released test versions of kernel that allow to boot Snow Leopard on AMD machines. Stable XNU kernels for v10.6 were released by Qoopz and Pcj. There are some popular builds based on Retail by the name Universal (Intel only), Hazard, and iAtkos. Since v10.6.2 Nawcom, Qoopz, and Andy Vandijck have been working on Legacy kernel for unsupported CPUs.
[edit]Mac OS X v10.7 "Lion"
When Apple had released the Developer Preview 1, Russian Hackintosh developer usr-sse2 was the first who created a method to install Lion. The method consists in deploying Mac OS X v10.7 image on a flash drive, and booting from it through XPC UEFI Bootloader (See DUET below). After some changes were made to the Chameleon source code, booting of Lion was possible with an updated version of Chameleon. First distribution based on a new version of OS is iAtkos L1 (Intel only).

Some causes of Kernel Panics
Publicado por Tony el jueves, 10 de noviembre de 2011 | 5:10

Kernel panics are often caused by one or more of the following issues.
- Defective or incompatible RAM often causes of kernel panics. Despite being a highly-reliable product, RAM can fail. Modern operating systems, like Mac OS X, are sensitive to RAM. Purchase additional RAM from either Apple or third parties who guarantee their RAM is compatible with Mac OS X, offer a liberal exchange policy, and provide a lifetime warranty should the RAM become defective or a later version of Mac OS X introduce incompatibilities.
- Incompatible, obsolete, or corrupted kernel extensions. If a third-party kernel extension or one of its dependencies is incompatible or obsolete with respect to the version of Mac OS X you are using, kernel panics may occur when the kernel executes such extensions. Likewise, if a kernel extension or one of its dependencies is corrupted, such as the result of hard disk corruption, kernel panics are likely to occur when the kernel attempts to load or execute such.
- Incompatible, obsolete, or corrupted drivers. Similar to kernel extensions, drivers for third-party hardware which are incompatible with the version of Mac OS X you are using, or which have become corrupted, will cause in kernel panics.
- Hard disk corruption, including bad sectors, directory corruption, and other hard-disk ills.
- Incorrect permissions on System-related files or folders.
- Insufficient RAM and available hard disk space.
- Improperly installed hardware or software.
- Defective hardware or software. Hardware failures, including a defective CPU, or programming errors can result in kernel panics.
- Incompatible hardware. While rare, this is generally the result of a third-party hardware vendor’s product failing to properly respond to the kernel or a kernel extension in an expected way.
Specific causes of kernel panics
The follow specific issues, including a variety of Mac OS X bugs, are known to cause kernel panics. If none of the following issues apply, proceed to the "Troubleshooting kernel panics"section.
- A Mac that is incompatible with Mac OS X or is missing the System folder. If you receive a No driver for this platform message along with a kernel panic:, then:
- Your Mac may be incompatible with Mac OS X.
- Your Mac’s System folder may be missing or damaged.
- See the AppleCare® Knowledge Base document “Mac OS X: ‘No Driver for this platform’ Message.”
- Outdated firmware. Firmware-related bugs have been known to cause kernel panics. Firmware updates for your Mac may not appear in Software Update. Check for updates to your Mac's firmware by searching Apple Downloads for firmware updates for your specific model of Mac. For example, if you have an iMac®, use the search criterion iMac firmware to search for iMac-related firmware updates. Download and install applicable firmware updates.
- To determine the current version of firmware installed on your Mac:
- Open System Profiler, located in the Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities folder.
- In the Contents pane — the left pane of the System Profiler window — selectHardware.
- The Hardware Overview for your Mac appears in the right pane of the System Profiler window.
- Your Mac's current Boot ROM firmware version is shown in the Boot ROM Version field. The Boot ROM firmware loads the operating system when you start up your Mac.
- Intel®-based Macs have a second firmware element specified in theSMC Version field. The SMC is the System Management Controller, which is responsible for the computer's power-management functions. See also the AppleCare Knowledge Base document "EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs."
- Improperly installed or loose AirPort® or AirPort Extreme® card. The card may have been installed upside-down or become dislodged. Consult the manual that came with your Mac for instructions on properly installing the AirPort or AirPort Extreme card. If your manual isn't handy, you can download a copy from the "Apple Manuals" page.
- Incorrect version of AirPort software with an AirPort Extreme card. Running an incorrect version of AirPort software with an AirPort Extreme card will result in a kernel panic. See the AppleCare Knowledge Base document “AirPort Extreme: Computer Doesn’t Start After Installing Card.”
- Corrupted sleepimage file on Mac portable computers employing safe sleep.
- Corrupted Time Machine® backup disk or backing up a corrupted disk or corrupted files with Time Machine.
- Journaling-related kernel panic. If the panic log begins with:
- panic(cpu 0 caller 0x0nnnnnnn): jnl: transaction too big...
- where nnnnnnn is a number representing a memory address, then see our "Journal-related kernel panic under Tiger" FAQ.
- Other Mac OS X bugs. Search the AppleCare® Knowledge Base for "kernel panic"(including the quotes), specifying the following additional search criteria:
- Restrict by product
: Choose your version of Mac OS X.
- Restrict by document type
: Choose Troubleshooting.
